A bit of HistoryThe First Presbyterian Church of Durango, Colorado, organized December 12, 1881, was one of the first churches in Durango. The original frame church building, dedicated May 28, 1882, was lost in the fire that swept through a large section of Durango July 1, 1889. With the help of contributions from many Presbyterian churches in the United States, the cornerstone of the present stone sanctuary building was laid June 13, 1890 on the site of the original frame building. Additional buildings, completed in 1940 and 1958, were added to accommodate the growing congregation and Sunday school. On June 11 of this year we celebrated the completion of a major 1.4 million dollar renovation project. An elevator was added to access 3 levels of our educational wing and the three levels of our educational week were completely remodeled. New electrical service, heating and cooling systems were installed in the educational wing and a new ventilation system was added to the sanctuary. The town of Durango, established by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, was developed to support a narrow gauge rail line supplying and returning the rich mineral resources from the mines of southwestern Colorado.
