The FPCD Session meeting Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Among  items discussed are the following matters of importance.

Russell Duren, Director of Youth Ministry, presented a "Green Cleaning Initiative" for endorsement by session of a grant application for Mission Funding from the Presbytery of Western Colorado. The initiative requests start-up money for an environmental effort linking the Presbyterian Churches of Cortez, Allison, Bayfield, Towaoc, Florida Mesa, and Durango in a youth-led mission of mixing and selling “green cleaners” for showers, glass, and general purposes. Russell's efforts were enthusiastically endorsed by session. Discussion followed about the importance of establishing "green" practices on the church campus.

Session approved a recommendation from Buildings and Grounds to provide the Director of Children and Family Ministry a warm, secure office. The plan is to convert the old manse kitchen thereby creating a new space for Erica. The smaller office now occupied by Erica will become a staff conference/lunch room equipped with table, white board, phone, and project calendar. Members of the church will provide labor. Materials are estimated to cost less than five-thousand dollars for insulating, painting, and general carpentry.

Session heard a preliminary report from the Finance Committee regarding the $408,000.00 still owed by the congregation for remodeling the Christian Education wing. Special gifts above regular giving to "debt pay-down" are not keeping pace with the monthly interest on the note. It was urgently noted that the congregation needs be reminded of their commitments made to paying off this loan before May 1, 2009.

Session discussed and affirmed the wording from the FPCD Manual of Operations (page 26, item 4) with regard to many requests for additional funds or fund-raising activities on campus. Nota Bene: The Stewardship and Mission Committee is responsible “for special fund raising projects/campaigns as requested by the Session and/or church members who submit proposals in writing with documentation as to the planned use and benefits to be derived by the congregation.”

Session agreed to distribute the approved minutes of church committees digitally. This greatly reduces paper, postage, and staff labor.

Committee Actions: Pastor Bill orders the session agenda one week before session’s monthly meeting. Requests for placing action items on the docket are due to the Clerk of Session by Wednesday. April 16 at 5 PM.
